Nissan concerned over talks between Renault and Geely

Nissan, within an alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi, is said to have expressed concerns over its technology transfer may be complicating Renault’s plans to sell a considerable stake of its petrol engine business to China’s Geely.

On one side of Renault’s restructuring activities, the French carmaker is trying to woo Nissan to invest in its new Ampere electric vehicle (EV) unit.

Nissan effectively wants its interests protected, should the deal between Renault and Geely fall through, and that any technology transfer regarding its internal combustion and hybrid technology remains with the EV unit alone.

On the other end, Renault plans to separate a large part of its petrol-powered vehicle business – Horse, to Geely.

An update for both sides will emerge on Nov 8 and will be delivered by Renault group chief executive Luca de Meo.

Although Nissan chief executive Makoto Uchida declined to comment on whether an agreement could be reached this month, he assured that he was in contact with Renault’s CEO Luca de Meo every weekend.

Should the deal go through between Renault and Geely, it would see the Chinese carmaker hold a controlling stake in Reanult’s petrol-car business.

Geely owns Volvo cars and a 9.7% stake in Daimler AG (the parent company of German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz).
