Toyota proves carbon-neutral fuel options feasible in motorsports

Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda, who is also the founder and team owner of Rookie Racing, as well as a racer under the name “Morizo”, led the team to participate in the 2022 Idemitsu 1500 Super Endurance race.

Commonly known as the Thailand 25H Endurance Race at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand, the race was held from Dec 17 to 18.

Participating team Orc Rookie, with a hydrogen-powered GR Corolla H2 concept (designated S23 for the race), managed to take second place after 230 laps.

Meanwhile, its number 22 car – a GR86 Carbon-Neutral Fuel (CNF) concept vehicle by Toyota Gazoo Racing Team Thailand, during the “Carbon Neutral Power Cup” leg of the race event, finished in first place after 443 laps.

Both vehicles took to the track for the first and last few hours of the race.

Additionally, team Orc Rookie Racing finished in third place after 152 laps with its number S32 car – a GR Corolla H2 concept car.

The participation is aimed at showcasing the feasibility of carbon neutrality through motorsports in Asia by utilising existing technology and resources.

The race was live-streamed on Thailand’s Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport Facebook page.
