BMW Malaysia has introduced the second-generation M2 (G87) into the country with two forms for choice.
Dubbed unofficially as the successor to the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the M2 compact high-performance coupe arrives on our shores in two variants.
Starting the standard M2, it is estimated to cost on-the-road without insurance at RM598,800 while the M2 Pro gets similarly tagged at an estimated RM642,800.

Both variants will be accompanied by an extended five-year warranty and service package.
Colour choices include Zandvoort Blue, Alpine White, Brooklyn Grey, Black Sapphire and Toronto Red.
Meanwhile, options for the interior’s upholstery include Leather Vernasca in Black with an exclusive highlight, Leather Vernasca in Black with Blue contrast stitching and Leather Vernasca in Cognac with décor stitching.
The M2 is touted to be lower than its predecessor with a reduced height and lower roof line as well as being more dimensionally generous while being infused with M aerodynamics.
With a wheelbase of 2,747mm (+54mm), it stands 4,580mm-long (+119mm), 1,887mm-wide (+33mm) and 1,403mm-tall (-11mm) while having a boot space of 390 litres.

Under the hood, lies the potent 3.0-litre inline-six S58B30T0 turbocharged engine with 460hp at 6,250rpm and 550Nm of torque from 2,600 to 5,950rpm thanks to key optimisations of a new lightweight crankshaft, racetrack-designed oil supply/cooling system and a 350bar high-pressure fuel injection system.
All that gets managed by an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission for the rear wheels that allows it to catapult from 0 to 100kph in 4.1 seconds and onwards to an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.
Opting for the additional M Driver’s Package will allow the M2 to reach a higher top speed of 285kph and will be retrofitted at any authorised BMW dealership nationwide.
The M2 also benefits from newly redesigned axle kinematics and in addition to its increase in track width it now sports a new double-joint spring strut front axle and wishbone combination that’s now made of lightweight aluminium.

Other notable features include Adaptive M Suspension and M Drive Professional system as well as the front six-piston fixed-calliper brakes that are partially obscured by front 19-inch and rear 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels in 930 M Bicolour design.
Opting for the M2 Pro will replace the blue standard brake callipers with the M Compound Brakes in high-gloss red before blacking out the same wheels.
In the looks department, the new M2 features a new unframed kidney-grille design with horizontal slats along with a striking apron and large,
nearly square-shaped air intakes for the engine and braking system.

The grille is flanked by Adaptive LED headlights with High-beam Assistant while a lightweight front aluminium splitter resides below with the power-domed front hood up top that’s complemented by widened side skirts and flared wheel arches.
At the rear, a spoiler lip resides to help generate some crucial downforce when at speed, while the rear diffuser cleans up turbulent air and shoots it out the rear underside of the body which helps produce greater downforce as the M twin tailpipes trumpet its resounding grunt.
Available as standard for the New BMW M2 is the M High-gloss Shadowline, with extended contents
available exclusively for the M2 with Pro Package.
Also exclusive for the M2 with Pro Package are the M Carbon Roof and M Lights Shadowline.
Inside, the driver-centric cabin features the German carmaker’s latest Curved Display with touch and M-specific displays while housing the latest-generation BMW M iDrive system.

Additionally, there’s the G87 features fully-electric M Sport seats with specific side bolsters for lateral support when cornering at speed.
An illuminated M logo is featured on the front seat headrests and is complemented with the M leather steering wheel with paddle-shifters and red M Mode buttons, M Anthracite headliner, Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite M Interior Trim, Setup and M Mode buttons for the centre console.
Finally, a Heads-up Display finds its way into the list of goodies with M-specific design and M font colours.
Exclusive to the new M2 with the Pro Package is the M Seat Belts and ‘Carbon Fibre’ M Interior Trim.
Aside from that, the cabin also gets fitted as standard with ambient lighting, tri-zone
automatic climate controls, storage compartment package, Interior and Exterior Mirror Package and an interior rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle function.

Thanks to the M2’s longer wheelbase, the two rear individually moulded seats are now complemented with noticeably greater legroom over its predecessor.
For safety, the M2 comes standard with Driving Assistant which comprises features such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Front Collision Warning with brake intervention (collision and pedestrian warning with city braking function), Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Rear Collision Prevention as well as Speed Limit Info with manual Speed Limit Assistant.
Additionally, it also features Parking Assistant, which includes Park Assist function, Active Park Distance Control (PDC), Reversing Assistant, Lateral Parking Aid and Reversing Assist Camera and adaptive cruise control.

“Built upon the unmistakable racing DNA of BMW M, it is a distillation of our motorsport expertise from the racetrack to the road. As we approach the end of the year, there is no better way to round off the celebrations of BMW M in Malaysia, than with the introduction of our new-generation BMW M2,” said BMW Group Malaysia managing director Hans de Visser.
